Our team, our philosopy and our approach

EDGE Sports Group was formed to react to the growing demand for Public Private Partnerships that provide year round family-oriented athletic venues. We assist clients in navigating through public processes at the local, state and federal levels; work with private capital and conventional lenders to obtain financing; and establish the programming and operational framework required to sustain the model.

EDGE Sports Group is a full-service company that brings over 30 years of private and public recreational design experience and offers the full range of strategic and operational services in: Assessment, Feasibility & Market Studies; Design, Permit & Construction Management; and Programming & Operations.

Our Philosophy

EDGE Sports Group’s project philosophy is centered in community engagement. Having developed and operated many of the newest family oriented athletic venues in Massachusetts through public private partnerships, EDGE Sports Group prides itself on fostering relationships with each possible end user through an “outside-in” perspective. Our team then works to combine those relationships with our comprehensive real-world design, development, financial, and operational industry knowledge to create one of a kind athletic ecosystem within budget. Our ever evolving “One Stop Shop” approach allows EDGE Sports Group to be uniquely positioned in the ever-changing complex road of athletic development alongside our industry leading partners to serve our clients every need.

EDGE Sports Group’s full array service approach is anchored in our philosophy of community engagement and project sustainability, backed by a proven track record of delivering communities best-in-class family oriented athletic venues. EDGE Sports Group’s approach stems from years of developing Public Private Partnerships through community engagement with an “outside-in” perspective. This practice represents EDGE Sports Group’s deliberate approach to avoid the common inward-focus bias and the presentation of preordained development concepts. Instead, our focus becomes a systematic and immersive analysis through community engagement of what facility uses and needs are relevant to both our client and the community they plan to serve for long term project sustainability. The crucial step is making a creative leap to discover a unique combination of surfaces that meets a client’s existing and projected demands, but that simultaneously never loses a direct line of sight to the end-user needs.

As a multi-faceted developer and operator, EDGE Sports Group assists clients with their vision by fostering community engagement, providing the resources and experiences necessary for a successful project, providing various financial mechanism required to complete it, and select the right people to refine and execute not only the study but the ultimate recreational development.

Brian DeVellis

PRESIDENT

Brian DeVellis is the president and founder of EDGE Sports Group, bringing over 30 years of experience assisting clients in the areas of Governmental and Community Relations, Planning and Zoning, and Land Development and Building Expedition. As a licensed Attorney and Landscape Architect, and the founding member of many of EDGE Sports Group’s facilities, Brian brings a proven winning combination of sports development experience, political expertise, accessibility, and responsiveness to ensure a successful outcome and oversees its representation in all design, entitlement and operational programming.

Derek Alfama

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Derek Alfama serves as the Chief Executive Officer of EDGE Sports Group where he oversees all daily operations of the company, working closely with Director of Operations and CFO.  Derek’s unique past experience as General Manager of the Worcester Blades of the CWHL, as well as Assistant Coach at Providence College, Assistant Coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Assistant Coach at The College of the Holy Cross, and as an assistant coach at Norwich University give him a unique perspective to steer the daily operations of the company.

Chris Walsh

CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER

Chris Walsh is responsible for the operation and programming of all EDGE managed facilities. Having spent the past 15 years involved in athletics as both an administrator and coach, Chris uses his unique perspective to seamlessly bridge the gap between EDGE and our customers. Currently working out of the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley, Chris is experienced in fulfilling the needs of a broad range of organizations.

Marybeth Brandt

DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES

With years of experience in athletic facility operations, events, and scheduling, Marybeth oversees all operations of the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center along with the Worcester White Hawks Hockey Program. Marybeth is experienced in fulfilling the ice or facility surface needs for a broad range of organizations.

Chris Collins

VICE-PRESIDENT, DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Chris Collins, with over 10 years of experience in athletic facility operations and program management, oversees sourcing new project acquisition and procurement, along with development and operations of all EDGE systems. Chris uses his experience to research emerging markets, proving feasibility assessments and market analysis, and programming development ahead of any new project.

Erin Daley

DIRECTOR OF MARKETING

Erin Daley, with over 20 years of experience in resource development, community outreach and media relations, oversees all marketing, sponsorship, media relations and outreach for EDGE Sports Group. Erin’s unparalleled experience and vast database of community and media relations, allows Erin the unique ability to tell the story of EDGE Sports to sponsors and media alike.

Chris Hartly

VICE-PRESIDENT, DIRECTOR OF FACILITIES

Chris Hartly, with over 15 years in the hockey facility operations and management, oversees all new facility operational layout and design, and coordinates all facility matters with the design and construction professionals. Chris’ wealth of knowledge allows him to point out potential design flaws before they become onsite issues. Once facilities are operational, Chris is responsible for all hiring, training, oversight and operational staff and their compliance with company means and methods.

Matt Colwell

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Since joining EDGE Sports Group as an intern Matt has experienced every aspect of athletic facility operations, management, and development allowing him to excel in any situation needed. Matt currently oversees multiple EDGE Sports properties.

Jackie Perez

DIRECTOR OF FACILITIES

Jackie Perez became Director of Facilities for EDGE Sports Group after starting as a Zamboni driver at EDGE facilities and then working her way up to General Manager at Thayer Sports Center. Jackie came to EDGE Sports Group after a long career in hockey, where she played NCAA D3 Hockey at Norwich University, and went on to coach NCAA D3 and Junior Women’s Hockey before scouting amateur hockey for Neutral Zone. 
Jackie takes a great deal of pride in creating meaningful relationships with staff and vendors at all EDGE Sports Group facilities. She firmly believes this is the key to ensuring the facilities run as efficiently as possible and are among the most desirable in New England.
